Spam and virus statistics between 2005 and 2016

Altospam statistics September 2016

After a significant reduction in the number of spam emails between 2011 and 2012 (following the dismantling of several Botnets), we can see that the rate of illegitimate emails has been gradually rising since mid-2015. The curve below shows the rate of spam received on all our infrastructures between June 2005 and the end of September 2016.

Spam rate

The average over the last 3 months is 73.43% and 75.17% for the month of September, with peaks of 86.33% for September 4, 2016. And 93.42% and 93.21% on August 13 and 14, 2016 (during the summer vacations, it’s normal, proportionally speaking, for there to be more spam, as the exchange of legitimate e-mails is lower). Generally speaking, the problem of spam remains, while phishing and FOVI attacks are becoming increasingly topical. That’s why it’s imperative to use a high-performance solution capable of detecting all unsolicited emails. Non-French solutions will be much less relevant in the face of these targeted attacks than French anti-spam solutions.

As far as viruses are concerned, as mentioned in our article ” Virus peaks of over 40% “, the number of malware is becoming very high. The graph below shows the evolution of the number of viruses received out of the total number of emails processed. Since mid-2015, the number of viruses sent by email has been rising steadily.

Virus rate

We had a peak in viruses between September 14 and 16, 2016, with 43.63%, 46.75% and 52.61% of traffic represented by viruses! In August, we had peaks of 42.59% and 43.61% on August 26 and 24, 2016. Conversely, we have seen days with very few viruses: on 10/09/2016 only 0.34%, on 28/08/2016 with 0.40% and on 04/09/2016 with 0.47%! On average, over the last three months, the rate of viruses detected was 19.35%. In September 2016, it stood at 26.45%, while between 2008 and 2013, the virus rate was 0.34%!

If we look in detail, this sharp increase in the number of viruses received is directly linked to that of ransomware. These are very well filtered by Altospam, but since most of them are polymorphic, it is essential to use technologies complementary to antivirus software to stop them before they reach their targets. Our article on : ” Altospam’s fortress against malware ” details the technologies we use to block malware.
